Davide Nicola Returns to Salernitana as Head Coach
Former Manager Reinstated After Fan Protests
Nicola's Second Spell to Begin with Home Match Against Napoli
Davide Nicola has been reappointed as head coach of Serie A club Salernitana, just two days after being sacked by the club. The Italian manager's reinstatement came after fan protests against his dismissal. Nicola's second spell at Salernitana will begin with a home match against league leaders Napoli on Saturday.
Nicola was initially sacked on Tuesday following a 8-2 defeat to Atalanta, which left Salernitana bottom of the Serie A table. However, the decision was met with widespread anger from fans, who protested outside the club's stadium and called for Nicola to be reinstated. The club's hierarchy eventually relented and Nicola was reappointed on Thursday.
Nicola is a former defender who played for a number of clubs in Italy, including Juventus and Lazio. He began his managerial career in 2010 and has previously managed Udinese, Genoa, and Crotone. Nicola's first spell at Salernitana lasted from February 2022 to January 2023. He led the club to safety from relegation last season, but was unable to prevent them from being relegated this season.
Nicola's return to Salernitana is a major boost for the club, who are in desperate need of a change of fortunes. The club have lost their last five matches in all competitions and are in danger of being relegated to Serie B. Nicola will be hoping to turn things around and help Salernitana avoid relegation.
